Project goal

The project aims to demonstrate how the unique characteristics of Mediterranean countries can strengthen urban strategies for tackling climate change, through six proofs of concept based on experimental pilots across different countries, focusing on the behavioural impact of collective sensory experiences.

Specific project objectives

  • To demonstrate the feasibility of using the territorial diversity and cultural similarities of Mediterranean countries for the successful integration of nudging strategies into climate change mitigation and adaptation policies at local, regional and national levels.
  • Address three main challenges in the current context:
    1. the gap between climate-responsible attitudes and behavior of the population of the MED region,
    2. lack of knowledge at the policy level about the potential of climate nudging as an alternative tool to regulatory changes and financial incentives for achieving ecosystem change and community resilience,
    3. lack of evidence on the interrelationship of cultural and behavioral aspects as relevant to the effectiveness and efficiency of nudging strategies.
  • Creation of a new and innovative Community of Interests and a Research Agenda which opens up space for additional research activities in this area.

Key project activities

  • To identify, through appropriate methodology, applicable and repeatable approaches for the valorization of nudging as a public policy tool.
  • Conduct six proofs of concept, based on the results of six experimental pilots, each located in a different country of the programme area. Five of the six pilots will focus on the potential behavioural impact of collective sensory experiences using sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch; the sixth pilot will be transversal and focused on new generations.
  • Collect results, evaluate them and draw lessons from six proofs of concept.

Project duration

27 months (January 1, 2024 – March 31, 2026)
